Keep dense material in its own group

Concrete and brick become heavy long before they fill a truck. Keep tile and stone in the same dense-material group. Do not bury it under wood, drywall or packaging. Photograph the pile with rough dimensions and depth.

  • Concrete and masonry
  • Tile and stone
  • Soil or sand when approved in advance

Contain sharp and loose pieces

Keep nails, screws, broken glass, metal edges, and splintered wood from protruding into the carrying route. Use containers suited to the material and weight. Do not overload bags or boxes until they tear or cannot be lifted safely.

  • Flatten clean cardboard separately
  • Bundle trim only when it stays manageable
  • Keep walkways free of loose fasteners

Identify material that needs another route

Paint, solvents, fuel, asbestos, chemicals, pressurized containers, and unidentified material should not be mixed into an ordinary debris pile. Stop work and use an appropriate specialist when the material or building condition is uncertain.

  • Photograph labels on unfamiliar containers
  • Disclose suspected asbestos or contamination
  • Keep liquids out of the pickup pile
